RESUMO A rica diversidade genética e ampla adaptação a diversos ambientes observadas na cultura do arroz (Oryza sativa L.) fornecem recursos fundamentais para conservação e melhoramento do cereal. A análise de correlações canônicas pode ser utilizada para aumentar a eficiência de seleção de genótipos superiores, pois várias características são avaliadas simultaneamente. Diante do exposto, este trabalho teve por objetivo comparar características morfoagronômicas e estimar a magnitude da associação e interdependência entre dois grupos de características em genótipos de tipos especiais de arroz. O ensaio foi realizado entre novembro de 2020 e abril de 2021, no Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), Seropédica - RJ. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados dezessete genótipos, dos quais cinco de arroz branco e onze de tipos especiais. Para a determinação das correlações canônicas foram utilizados dois grupos de variáveis, sendo o grupo I composto por quatro características morfológicas e o grupo II composto por quatro componentes da produção. Houve diferenças significativas (P<0,01) entre os genótipos para as oito características avaliadas. O primeiro, o segundo e terceiro pares apresentaram correlações canônicas significativas a 5% de probabilidade, demonstrando que esses grupos não são independentes. A seleção de genótipos superiores, para produção, pode basear-se na escolha de plantas com maior espessura da folha bandeira, maior altura e menor ângulo da folha bandeira.

ABSTRACT The rich genetic diversity and wide adaptation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to different environments provide fundamental resources for its conservation and improvement. The analysis of canonical correlations can be used to increase the efficiency of selecting superior genotypes, as several traits are evaluated simultaneously. Thus, this study aimed to compare morphoagronomic traits and estimate the magnitude of the association and interdependence between two groups of traits in genotypes of special types of rice. The experiment was carried out between November 2020 and April 2021 at the Department of Plant Science of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), Seropédica - RJ. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with four replications. Seventeen genotypes were evaluated, five of them consisting of white rice and eleven special types of rice. Two groups of variables were used to determine the canonical correlations, with group I composed of four morphological traits and group II composed of four yield components. Significant differences (P<0.01) were observed between genotypes for the eight evaluated traits. The first, second, and third pairs showed significant canonical correlations at a 5% probability, demonstrating that these groups are not independent. The selection of superior genotypes for production can be based on choosing plants with higher flag leaf thickness, higher height, and lower flag leaf angle.

ABSTRACT Capsicum peppers originate from the American continent. Their culinary and medicinal potential, first exploited by indigenous peoples over 7000 years ago is vast, however more studies are needed. Despite the existence of germplasm banks that house hundreds of accessions of the genus, only a little of this diversity is seen in large markets. In this respect, the morpho-agronomic characterization of the accessions allows not only the identification of the existing variability, but also the agronomic and commercial potential of the genotypes. Therefore, this study proposes to characterize and estimate genetic divergence between accessions of the Capsicum germplasm collection at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) based on multicategorical traits. The species were identified and 29 accessions were characterized in a greenhouse, based on 31 multicategorical descriptors of the crop. The collected data were subjected to the Cole-Rodgers dissimilarity index and to hierarchical clustering (Nearest Neighbor) and optimization (Tocher’s) methods. Tocher's method was considered the most suitable to group the accessions of the germplasm bank. Results indicate that the multicategorical descriptors properly assess the diversity in the chosen method and display the existence of high variability in the collection, which can be used in Capsicum spp. breeding programs.

RESUMO: O arroz vermelho é um tipo especial de arroz que devido a atributos benéficos a saúde é consumido na forma integral e tornou-se uma opção de diversificação de cultivo. Diversos fatores durante o desenvolvimento da planta podem afetar o rendimento de beneficiamento. Com isso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adaptabilidade, estabilidade e beneficiamento de grãos de cultivares de arroz vermelho e compará-la a de arroz branco produzidas nos municípios de Campos dos Goytacazes, Seropédica e Pinheiral, RJ, durante os anos agrícolas de 2016/2017 e 2017/2018. Os tratamentos foram duas cultivares de arroz branco (BRS Esmeralda e IAC 201) e duas de arroz vermelho (ENA-AR1601 e Virgínia), distribuídos no campo sob o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições. Foram avaliadas a produtividade, classe do grão, o rendimento de engenho e de grãos inteiros. As médias das cultivares em diferentes locais e anos foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (P< 0,05). Foi adotada a metodologia recomendada por Eberhart e Russell para estimativa dos parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade. A classificação dos grãos das cultivares ENA-AR1601 e Virgínia foi médio e longo, respectivamente. As cultivares de arroz vermelho ENA-AR 1601 e Virgínia apresentaram desempenho produtivo superior a média nacional. As cultivares de arroz vermelho e BRS Esmeralda apresentaram comportamento altamente previsível de acordo ao estímulo ambiental. Com valores médios de 62%, nos dois anos avaliados, as cultivares de arroz vermelho apresentaram excelente rendimento de beneficiamento.

ABSTRACT: Red rice is consumed in whole grain form due to its beneficial nutritional attributes and has become an option for crop diversification. Several factors during plant development can affect the crop’syield. This study evaluated the adaptability and stability of the post-harvest processing of red rice cultivars and compare them with those of white rice cultivars grown in the municipalities of Campos dos Goytacazes, Seropédica, and Pinheiral, RJ, between 2016 and 2018. Two white rice (BRS Esmeralda and IAC 201) and two red rice cultivars (ENA-AR1601 and Virginia) were distributed in the field under randomized block design with five repetitions. Yield, grain class, ingenuity, and whole grain yield were evaluated. The means of these parameters for cultivars in different locations and years were compared by Tukey’s test (P < 0.05). The Eberhart and Russell regression model was used to estimate the adaptability and stability parameters. The grain classification of the cultivars ENA-AR1601 and Virginia was medium and long, respectively. The red rice cultivars ENA-AR 1601 and Virginia showed higher productive performance than the national average. The red rice cultivars and BRS Esmeralda showed highly predictable behavior based on the environmental stimulus. With average values of 62% in the two years evaluated, the red rice cultivars showed excellent processing yield.

Abstract Pennisetum purpureum Schum. has been a key alternative as an energy source in Brazil because of its higher dry matter accumulation and fiber content. This research aimed to select superior individuals of P. purpureum for energy purposes using among-and-within family selection. The study was carried out in Campos dos Goytacazes- RJ (Brazil), using eight full-sib families. Plants were individually assessed during two pasture cuttings, one in 2014, and another in 2015. The dry matter production (DMP) was correlated with the number of tillers, stem diameter, plant height, and neutral detergent fiber content. Plant selection criteria in both cuts were through direct and indirect selections, and Smith and Hazel index. A joint analysis of variance showed significant differences for all five traits assessed in both cuts. The results achieved with Smith and Hazel index were promising for simultaneous selection of the evaluated traits, favoring selection of superior families and individuals them.

RESUMO O capim-elefante sofre sucessivos cortes em avaliações periódicas, possibilitando identificar clones com alta estabilidade para a produção de matéria seca, podendo ser utilizados para a produção de energia. O presente estudo foi realizado para avaliar a estabilidade na produção de matéria seca, considerando métodos paramétricos e não paramétricos, em genótipos de capim-elefante para produção de biomassa submetido a cortes sucessivos nas condições climáticas do Norte Fluminense (RJ, Brasil). A variável medida nos 40 genótipos foi a produção de matéria seca (DMY) em 2009, 2010 e 2011 em um experimento de campo em blocos casualizados com duas repetições. Cada amostra foi cultivada em diferentes condições ambientais. Os métodos de estabilidade testados foram de Yates e Cochran, Plaisted e Peterson, Wricke, Annicchiarico, Lin e Binns e Kang e Phan. Os resultados indicaram que o corte (E) e os genótipos (G) influenciaram significativamente no desempenho para a produção de matéria seca. Os métodos de estabilidade não-paramétrica foram eficientes para a avaliação da estabilidade no rendimento da matéria seca. Os genótipos Mercker, Pinda-México, Mercker 86-México, Guaçu/IZ, Mercker Pinda, P-241-Piracicaba e Cubano Pinda tiveram uma estabilidade estável na produção de matéria seca. Por conseguinte, existem genótipos que podem ser explorados em futuros programas de melhoramento, a fim de melhorar a produtividade de capim elefante no ambiente.

ABSTRACT The elephant-grass undergoes successive cutting and periodical evaluations that it possible to identify clones with high stability for dry matter production, which can be used for energy production. The present study was carried out to evaluate stability dry matter yield for different parametric and non-parametric methods in elephant grass genotypes for biomass production undergoes successive cutting in the agroclimatic conditions of the Norte Fluminense (RJ, Brazil). The variable measured in the 40 genotypes was dry matter yield (DMY) at 2009, 2010 and 2011 in a field study designed as randomized block design with two replicates. Each sample was grown in different environment condition. The stability methods tested were the Yates and Cochran’s, Plaisted and Peterson’s, Wricke’s ecovalence, Annicchiarico’s, Lin and Binns’ and Kang and Phan’s. Results indicated that cutting (E) and genotypes (G) influenced significantly on the performance of dry matter yield. The non-parametric stability methods were effective for the evaluation of stability in dry matter yield. Genotypes Mercker, Pinda-México, Mercker 86-México, Guaçu/IZ, Mercker Pinda, P-241-Piracicaba and Cubano Pinda were stable stability dry matter yield. Hence, there are genotypes may be exploited in future breeding programmes in order to improve productivity of upland elephant grass over environment.

O arroz vermelho é conhecido como planta invasora, em lavouras de arroz branco. Apesar de possuir características como porte elevado e maior susceptibilidade ao acamamento, já foram observados genótipos de arroz vermelho com características semelhantes às das cultivares de arroz branco. O presente estudo objetivou comparar genótipos de arroz vermelho (Vermelho Virgínia e Vermelho Pequeno) e branco (cultivares BRS Primavera e Caiapó), no que concerne a caracteres morfoagronômicos, sob condições de cultivo de sequeiro (terras altas). Para tanto, foi instalado experimento em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições, em Seropédica (RJ), de novembro de 2009 a março de 2010. O genótipo Vermelho Virgínia apresentou maior porte e menor relação comprimento x largura do grão, enquanto o Vermelho Pequeno caracterizou-se pela menor massa de mil espiguetas. Os genótipos de arroz vermelho tiveram maior produtividade de panículas viáveis e não diferiram (p > 0,05) das cultivares de arroz branco, em percentagem de espiguetas férteis por panícula e produtividade de grãos, revelando o potencial agronômico destes genótipos para cultivo em condições de sequeiro.

Red rice is considered a weed in white rice fields. Despite presenting features such as higher susceptibility to lodging and plant height, red rice genotypes with traits similar to white rice cultivars have already been observed. The aim of this study was to compare morphological and agronomic traits of red rice genotypes (Vermelho Pequeno and Vermelho Virgínia) and white rice cultivars (BRS Primavera and Caiapó) under upland crop conditions. An experiment was conducted in randomized blocks design, with five replications, in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, from November 2009 to March 2010. The Vermelho Virgínia genotype showed higher plant height and lower length x grain width ratio, while the Vermelho Pequeno genotype presented the lowest one thousand spikelets weight. The red rice genotypes showed a higher yield for viable panicles and no significant differences (p > 0.05) in relation to white rice cultivars, concerning percentage of fertile spikelets per panicle and grain yield, revealing their agronomic potential for upland crop conditions.
